Frequently Asked Questions - Income

Q - Is the Local Authority financially assessing the student for the school?
A - Yes - Assessment will be required for all EMA applicants for each year.

Q - How will income be assessed?
A - It is estimated that over 70% of people will have a Tax Credit Award Notice detailing their income for the last year. Therefore you should only have to assess around 27% of applicants.

Q - Is there a definition of household income?
A - Household income assessment takes account of the gross income of those adults who have a caring responsibility for the children in their household - whether a single person or a couple are married or unmarried. This approach to means testing is used across Government and is not unique to EMAs.

Q - What about changes of financial circumstances?
A - The EMA award stands for the year, unless there is a drop in income. It is the responsibility of the students to notify the Local Education Authority or FE college.
